My wife and I have a nexus card that will expire next year. We did not renew our passports because we only use the Nexus to drive across the border – we do not fly. We drive to Florida a couple times a year. Is it required to have a passport to renew our nexus cards? I really do not want to pay for a passport and a nexus card.

You do not have to provide a passport to apply for a NEXUS Card, but you will have to provide alternative proof of citizenship (such as a birth certificate) and proof of identity (such as your driver’s license).

Please note that, although the NEXUS is assumed to be a passport substitute for travelling across the border, not all CBSA and CBP agents recognize it as such. Make sure you have an enhanced driver’s license as well as your NEXUS Card when crossing the border.
