I renewed my PR card in 2014 and took an international trip in May 2015. When I arrived in Toronto I was referred to the CBSA automated process and my PR card could not be read by the machine. I was then referred to an officer who then sent me for secondary check to another immigration officer. They reviewed everything and told me it was a card error and it shows that ‘file did not download properly’. I will be travelling frequently on business and to avoid this problem how to I fix it so I don’t go through this process each time I travel since its not my fault that the card is not working properly (system error on their side). Appreciate any advice on how to get this fixed as soon as possible. I am travelling again next week.

You should call CIC at 1-888-242‑2100. They should be able to answer your question.

The likely solution is that you will have to fax the PR Card issuing office declaring that your card is not working in the CBSA terminals, but call the Call Centre to find out for sure.
