The NEXUS card is a trusted traveller initiative from the United States Customs and Border Protection. It was designed to expedite land, air and sea travel for low risk travellers between Canada and the United States. To get your NEXUS Card you must be eligible and then you must complete the following steps:

  • Create a account
  • Gather your citizenship and admissibility documents
  • Go to the TTP website
  • Complete the application
  • Book your interview
  • Attend your interview
  • Receive your NEXUS Card in the mail
Is it possible to apply for a family NEXUS pass?

No. Each applicant regardless of age must apply individually for a NEXUS card; this includes infant applicants. Canadian and US border agencies screen each individual applicant separately; the reason for this is that within a family there may be a member who does not fit the eligibility requirements.

What documents do I need for a nexus card; do I have to have a visa or passport?

You may qualify to participate in NEXUS if you are a citizen or permanent resident of Canada or the United States and have lived in Canada and/or the United States continuously for the last three years.

To apply you are required to provide proof of citizenship and admissibility (one of the following):

Valid passport, Birth certificate, Canadian citizenship certificate (with photo) or card, or Certificate of Indian Status

You are also required to provide proof of current place of residence (one of the following):

Valid driver’s license or Provincial identification card

Do I need to have a passport to get a NEXUS card?

As long as you are a Canadian or American citizen you do not need a passport to get a NEXUS card. However, if you intend to use your NEXUS card for air travel between the US and Canada, you are advised to obtain a valid passport. You can apply for a NEXUS card using your birth certificate, citizenship certificate, naturalization certificate or certificate of Indian Status.

Hi, I’m submitted my nexus application 5 weeks ago, received a phone call 17 days ago asking for more information, how do I find out the status?

If you have submitted your Nexus application direct to Canada and Border Services Agency, please telephone: Service in English: 1-800-461-9999 or email

If you have applied via a third party organisation you would need to contact them. Please note if you are unsure on how you applied, please check your credit card statement for the name of the company.

My wife and I applied for NEXUS cards at the same time. I have been invited for interview but my wife’s application is still under review. Why have we not been processed together?

Each NEXUS application is checked individually with both law enforcement and immigration agencies in the USA and Canada. Some checks are processed faster than others depending on both the agencies? workload and the individual applicant’s status. If your wife’s application was submitted over 4 weeks ago you should contact the Trusted Traveller hotline on 1-866-530-4172. They will be able to assist you further.

If I am renewing my Canadian passport, does the application for a NEXUS card become a separate issue and what is the general turn around time to get a NEXUS card. Born in Alberta, live in Alberta 50+ years? Thank you

To renew your passport please visit Passport Canada

The application for a NEXUS card needs to be submitted separately. To qualify for NEXUS you need to be a ?citizen or permanent resident of the United States or Canada, have resided in either or both countries for the past three years and who pass criminal history and law enforcement checks?.

You can apply to NEXUS online using the Trusted Traveller Website.

Once the application is submitted it takes on average 3-4 weeks to receive an approval notification from Canadian Border Services Agency. If you are approved you will need to attend an interview at one of the Nexus Enrolment Centers. After the interview it takes on average 10 business days to receive the Nexus Card.

I submitted my application for a NEXUS pass 2 months ago, and would like to know what the status of my application is. Is there a number I should call to receive this information?

You can log onto your TTP account on the TTP website or call the TTP hotline on 1-866-530-4172. They will be able to assist you further.

We are planning to travel to the US with some friends who are not NEXUS card holders. Can we still use the NEXUS lanes?

No. Every member travelling with you must be a card holder in order for you to use the NEXUS lane. If you attempt to use the NEXUS lane with non-members or you attempt to drop off non-NEXUS passengers before you pull up to the NEXUS kiosk, your cards will be revoked, you will loose your trusted traveler status and you will not be able to apply for a NEXUS card again.

I am a permanent resident of Canada. If I have a NEXUS card will I still need a US visa to cross into the United States?

Yes. Even though you are a NEXUS card holder, you must hold a valid US visa if you are a citizen from a country that is not covered by the Visa Waiver Program.
