How to get a Temporary Resident Visa, Work Permit, Supper Visa or Study Permit for Canada

Most people who need visas can now apply online for visitor visas. To apply for a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV aka visitor visa) on paper, you must

  • satisfy a visa officer that you will leave Canada at the end of your stay,
  • show that you have enough money to maintain yourself and your family members in Canada and to return home,
  • not intend to work or study in Canada unless authorized to do so with a work permit or study permit,
  • be law abiding and have no record of criminal activity,
  • not be a risk to the security of Canada,
  • provide any additional document requested by the officer to establish your admissibility, and
  • be in good health (complete a medical examination if required).
Not all visitors need visas to come to Canada. If you are eligible for an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA), you do not need a visa.

As a Bermudian living in Bermuda with a Son & his Family residing in Canada, do I need an eTA or Visa?

You will need an eTA as of March 16, 2016 if you are coming to Canada by air. You do not need a visa.

I am dating a Lebanese man that has a visitor Visa that expires in 5 months. What can he do to re-enter the country and visit me for a while.

He needs to extend his stay in Canada by going to this page on CIC’s website and applying online or by paper, whichever he can do.

I am a Canadian citizen living outside of Canada. I am pregnant and want to give birth in Canada, but my partner needs a tourist visa. Is it best for me to provide a letter of invitation for him or have his family member (who is a Canadian citizen) try for the visa? I heard they may deny if I submit because he may overstay.

It doesn’t matter who writes the letter. What matters is that your husband provides Canadian immigration authorities with a reason that he will be returning to his home country. That could be a job, a house, or various other things (especially a combination thereof).

Maybe you should sponsor him instead?

With someone for 2 years from Jamaica – have not yet applied for a visitors visa. We want to get married but I would like him to come here and meet my parents first. Will he be granted a visa to visit if we have a return ticket and proof of enough money? Or does he need proof of employment in Jamaica to grant that? Once here, if we decided to marry here instead of Jamaica, can we then apply for extension to the visa? How long till he can get a work permit? Or is better to just put in the Outland Permanent Resident visa instead of the visitors visa? Will he be eligible to come to Canada after the initial stage or do have to wait the whole 22+ months?

Let me try to answer your questions:

  • If he just has a return ticket and money, that won’t work. He will need proof of ties, such as proof of employment, or a lease/deed, that kind of thing.
  • If you decide to marry in Canada, you can sponsor him immediately after the marriage, from within Canada. He will need to renew his visitor visa if you plan to travel outside of Canada.
  • He can apply for a work permit immediately if you sponsor him “inland.” The application usually takes 6-8 weeks (whereas the entire application takes about 27 months).
  • Outland currently takes 24 months, so there isn’t much difference in time. The important difference is that you can appeal outland. You cannot appeal inland.
  • He can come to Canada during the outland process if he gets a visitor visa (and can prove he will return to Jamaica at the visa’s expiry).

how do i applied for canada unkill worker visa

If you are trying to come to Canada as an unskilled or semi-skilled worker, you will either need a job offer from a Canadian employer (supported by an LMIA – Labour Market Impact Assessment) or you will need to get nominated by one of the few provinces that nominate foreign semi-skilled workers for permanent residence.

I am married to Canadian but we lived here in Philippines together. Is it possible I can go with him just to visit Canada just good for two weeks?

Yes, but you will still need a visa, even if you are travelling with your Canadian husband.

My ex husband is trying to become a Canadian resident I have sole custody of our daughter but he is claiming she still has to go to a doctor of Canada’s choice for test is this correct

My daughter studies in Canada. Her student permit is valid till 2017 but visa stamped on her passport valid till 2016 as her passport will expire on 2016. How she can stamp VISA in her new passport?

Your daughter will have to carry her old passport with her, as proof of her study permit.

I am a US citizen and have a current passport but it expires in February 2016 . Can I travel to Canada to visit Montreal

Canadian authorities regularly let in US citizens without the required 6 months validity on your passport. However, it is up to the CBSA officer whether or not to admit you. The only way you will know for sure is by trying: they may let you in or they may ask you to get a new passport.

Hello I am a Irish Citizen and i am thinking of moving to Canada for a work and travel perhaps move for a long time. my question is it very difficult to get a working permit and resident permit as a Irish citizen? i do have a option to apply for a British passport through my mother as she was born in Scotland. I would really appreciate your help.

If you are young enough, you may be eligible for the Working Holiday program, for which you do not need a job offer. Otherwise, it can be difficult to get a job offer unless you know someone.

I wish to marry my Cuban boyfriend in Canada. How can I do this successfully? Can I invite him with TRV as my fiancé?

Yes, he will have to come with a visitor visa and you will have to invite him unless you want to marry in Cuba.

I am a Filipino and got married to a Canadian citizen in Canada. We are separated now, can i apply for an immigrant visa without the sponsor of my husband? Presently, i’m in the Philippines.

If you still want to come to Canada you will have to come under a different immigration program, which means qualifying independently.

I am in Temporary Foreign Worker here in Canada. My working permit will expire this coming October. But I am almost 6 months pregnant now going 7 months in October so my bf is a Canadian citizen here and we’re planning to get married this month. My problem is I only have few more weeks or let’s say only a month to stay here is it possible we can apply for extension to stay here until i gave birth? Because when I reached my 7 months pregnancy it will be hard time for me to travel it might be they will not allowed me to travel. Please help me. Thank you

Yes, you can apply for an visa or work permit extension before he sponsors you. And you should note that you are pregnant (and how far along) in the application.

She can apply for a visa. You can write her an invitation letter and pledge to support her while she’s here.

I am a dual Canadian/US citizen born in Canada who now lives in the US. Is there any way i can bring my Russian Green Card holding wife to Canada for a few days to attend a wedding. Her Russian Passport has expired and we’re not sure she can get a renewed passport in time.

If she has an enhanced driver’s license from a US state, then you can drive across the border. Otherwise, she needs that passport.
