Canada Passport FAQ

Canadian citizens are eligible to apply for a Canadian passport. You do not have to be resident in Canada to apply for a new or to renew your Canadian passport. Canadian passports are issued by Passport Canada.

  • Choose the passport application you need: regular or simplified renewal
  • Complete the passport application
  • Gather your required documents and get your photos taken
  • Get your guarantor to endorse your application: If you are a Canadian citizen applying for your first Canadian passport, or your current Canadian passport has been expired for more than 1 year, then you will need to find a guarantor. A guarantor is someone other than yourself who confirms your identity for Passport Canada.
  • Submit your application by mail or in person.
Do I need to give my land location as my address? I live on a farm so there is no street address.

For your mailing address you need to provide an address you can receive mail at. But for your residential address you can provide where your land location.

My son needs ane passport and is 17. He has had a child one. What form do we complete now? Is a new adult one or a renewal adult one?

Your son must use the general adult application to apply for his first adult passport.

You fill out the general application as it’s your first adult passport.

It is a mail-in application from the US so yes, it is possible. He will need his citizenship certificate or birth certificate and photo ID to apply.

can I apply for my 18 year old son’s Canadian passport in person, at a Toronto passport office, if he is not with me? he has not had a passport before. He is a resident of USA, but has a Canadian citizenship card from when he was much younger. Or does he have to be present to apply at the office?

You can only do it if you live in the same house with him.

My sons passport expires in Sept 2017. He will be traveling to Europe in July 2017. He is 17 years old. Can we renew his passport or do we have to do a whole new application?

He has to complete a general application as he is not eligible to renew.

How to dispose of expired passports

You can return your passport to the agency that issued it. Or you can destroy it.

You don’t need a new passport until you current one expires.

The form for a Canadian passport states that if you have had a previous passport that you need to provide its number. Mine was issued in Nfld in the early 70’s and I do have it. Is that a problem?

No, it just means your application will be processed essentially as if it is your first passport application.

You should make sure you are applying using the general form and not the simplified renewal form.

You do not have to provide a previous passport to get your first passport.

Yes you can, you will just have to demonstrate your relationship.

She will need to fill out the normal application form plus the Declaration Concerning a lost stolen, inaccessible, damaged or found Canadian travel document.

I have a British & a Canadian passport and I am going to England for 10 days do I show both passports.

When you enter the UK, you show your British passport.

When you return to Canada, you show your Canadian passport.
